Delhi Couture Week ’11: Shantanu & Nikhil

Honestly speaking, I haven’t managed to form a definite opinion on Shantanu & Nikhil’s couture collection at DCW. There was something off about their show. Having said that, some nice pieces and a very confident Sonakshi Sinha walking the ramp saved the day for them. Take a look at the pics and video and tell me what you think of it.

P.S: Dear Sonakshi, a little weight loss is definitely in order(we can do it!).

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Anju Modi

Her collection was a complete surprise. Everyone was mesmerized by her beautiful use of red+white, pretty embroidery, sheer drapes, flowy gowns, kurtas and elegant cholis. I noticed a hint of Sabyasachi or may be it’s just her Kolkata roots as my friend suggested. I felt it was the best till I saw Manish Malhotra and Rohit Bal (both reviews coming soon!). The show stopper Shraddha Kapoor looked elegant and walked the ramp gracefully. If you’re getting married anytime soon, I really suggest you get an Anju Modi piece in your trousseau.

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Suneet Varma

The show started to the beats of temple bells and a couple performing an erotic dance. It was as if a couple from one of the Khajuraho temple sculptures had come alive. It was easy to guess, the theme was Kamasutra! We are not going to discuss his comment on calling Kamasutra the most celebrated Hindu text and all that. Let’s talk about the clothes from this collection. Well, they were pretty, they were vibrant, but nothing about them exclaimed sensuality and Kamasutra except for those conical bustier blouses. But they too rather reminded me of Jean Paul Gaultier’s pointy ‘Blond ambition look’ for Madonna. Take a look at the pictures and decide for yourself.

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Manav Gangwani

There was a lot of buzz around Manav Gangwani’s show on the second day of the Delhi Couture Week. People who were around for the fittings were in love with what he had to offer. And he didn’t disappoint! Those clothes transported me to a bridal fantasy land. The details were impeccable, the colours were hypnotic yellows and oranges, the finish was brilliant, those Swarovski elements were at their sparkling best, the set was elaborate, the music was lovely…. basically it was the first ‘real’ couture show of the fabled Couture Week. Here are the pictures and yes don’t miss the video.

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Meera & Muzaffar Ali

Dear Muzaffar Ali, I am a fan of everything you do in terms of poetry, writing, films, painting, sufi music, social work and of course fashion. You were one of the first couturiers in the country and I am still mesmerized by those beautiful clothes worn by Rekha in Umrao Jaan.  In short what I am trying to say is that I am a tiny bit disappointed. What I saw on the ramp during your show at Delhi Couture Week 2011 wasn’t ‘couture’ in any sense of the word. Yes there were some really really gorgeous farshi ghararas, lehengas, peshwaz, saris and dresses infused with detailed traditional Lucknowi weaves, gota work, ikat prints and sequins but nothing said ‘Couture’. This collection could have been showcased at any fashion week! Please don’t hate me! Anyway, thank you for the superb live Qawwali during the show. It was truly beautiful!
