Oscars 2012 Red Carpet : Love, Like and Utter Dislike

Since every fashion blogger worth his/her lust for fashion must do a post on Oscars on the bloody day itself, I hereby share with you looks that I totally love, like and utterly dislike (not hate, my mother thinks it’s too harsh a word but I am not using it only ‘cuz dislike rhymes better with like! Captain obvious – yes I am).

Love: Lots of fabulously dresses couples and ladies. Here’s a toast to you!

Colin Firth in recycled Tom Ford, with Livia Giuggioli in eco Valentino. He looked dapper and she looked graceful. That little vintage feel to that pretty red gown just made it extra special.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture. Super gorgeous, fun and elegant. Oh love her alien ears :P

George Clooney in Giorgio Armani and girlfriend Stacy Keibler in gold Marchesa. S.T.U.N.N.I.N.G!!

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford. Whoever is questioning whether she worked it or not, go jump off a cliff or something 'cuz she worked it fabulously!

Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab. Very red carpet. Very Elie Saab.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen. Just look at that dress, it's gold!! I just wish she had done a little Hawaii detour for a quick tan. Having said that, she owns this dress even with her porcelain skin .

Rose Byrne shined oh-so-brightly in a shimmering Vivienne Westwood dress. STAR!

Gary Oldman wearing Paul Smith with his wife Alexandra Edenborough. I can't seem to find out who's she wearing but I am loving the ease and grace with which she's wearing that dress that I am not particularly in love with.

Sacha Baron Cohen "apparently in John Galliano" Apparently I love it!

Likes: These are the looks that I thought were lovely, simple and absolutely worth a mention.

Berenice Bejo in painstakingly crafted Elie Saab gown looked pretty but I felt the colour of the gown was too mellow for her skintone and copper-toned hair.

Shailene Woodley looks lovely in Valentino but is also trying very hard to say "I am no Miley Cyrus." A girl's got to have some fun!

It's vintage. It's Dior. It's got polka dots. It's Red. It's pretty. I like it. But still, I am not in love with this dress on Natalie Portman. Am I the only one?

Viola Davis in Vera Wang. It screams Vera Wang now available in Green! It's just a choked breath away from being in the third category.

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton. Cute. Period.

Brad Pitt in Tom Ford and Angelina Jolie in Versace. It's the velvet, yeah it's only the velevt that saves it from being another black red carpet staple. Agree?

Meryl Streep in eco Lanvin. If anyone else had worn that dress, she would have been in the third category. Right there with Glenn Close.

Dislikes: It’s strange that some of my favourite ladies are in desperate need of a new stylist. Fire that bum!

Glenn Close stole my mother's curtains and gave them to Zac Posen. This is what he made. Sick!

Kristen Wiig. I love you so so much and you go ahead and wear nude from head to the bloody toe?? BIG BLAH!

Judy Greer in Monique Lhullier. She really looks like she's on a lab table about to be slit open. Really, what with those lines, they look like pre-operation markings.

Maya Rudolph in Johanna Johnson. 2nd Bridesmaids cast in this category. Trust me, Debenhams stocks better stuff!

Ellie Kemper in Armani Prive. Awww did they leave you with all that junk in the basement for too long? Poor rusted you!

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad. Sheer? Really? Why?

What do you think of my picks, do you agree or disagree? I would love to hear… leave a comment or just tweet!

WIFW A/W ’12 My two cents –> Anand Bhushan

His show was definitely one of my top favourites at WIFW A/W ’12. With those gorgeous, unexpected junkyard inspired textures and metallic shades of grey he did take (pardon my girly-ness) everyone’s breath away. Here’s my two cents:

Me likey:
- Like I said, those rusted scrap parts inspired textures were simply awe-inspiring. Even though some pieces looked a little uncomfortable to wear, I feel that designers deserve the creative space in terms of what they showcase on the ramp. Eventually, their buyers tone these things down anyway.

- The music was apt. Slow but strong techno beats set the mood for the collection brilliantly.

- I liked that he drew a line and teamed up heavy, textured skirts/tops with lighter, softer separates.

Me no likey:

Oh just look at this collection… how could I possibly dislike anything?!

I say:

Designers like Anand Bhushan, Rimzim Dadu and Amit Agarwal constantly play with textures and create some superlative work which I humbly feel is truly comparable to that of any other International designer.

Although, I would have loved to see more pieces. May be I am being greedy but may be a hint of colour(not necessarily bright) would have been nice. I know that’s a hypothetical situation and I think I am really being greedy so I’ll just shut up. You take a bow, Anand Bhushan!

xoxo

Runway review WIFW A/W ’12 My two cents –> Nachiket Barve

Nachiket Barve’s Caravan collection for Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 12 was like someone took a massive pichkari/water-gun filled with bright colours and blasted me with it. I did enjoy it at first but then when it started to hurt my eyes, it wasn’t that much fun anymore.

Here’s the three part review of his show.

Me likey:

The marriage of traditional colours and embroidery with contemporary silhouettes.

Beautiful, glossy patent leather shoes.

The film showcased at the beginning of the show featuring Vipasha Agarwal. She looked absolutely stunning.

Me no likey:

There were some bandhni pieces that I can buy off a local market for like nothing and rock it with a nice belt.

Colours were too overpowering. A neutral base or mix would have helped. But I think he knows what his buyers seek, better.

I say:

I get a bit disappointed when good designers like him simply pick a traditional craft and put it up on the ramp after giving it a little “modern” twist. I expect more.

Runway review WIFW A/W ’12 My two cents –> James Ferreira

Here’s my two cents on what I think made James Ferreira’s collection lovely and wearable. And not to forget autumn-winter, an aspect a lot of senior designers ignored.

Me likey:

Feminine, fluid tie&dye dresses in satin, cotton and handwoven fabric.

Pretty jewel tones.

Colourful wintery jackets, capes and shrugs.

Loved the purple and blue leggings that his models wore with short dresses.

Me no likey:

I felt that some of the dresses draped a bit funny, making the models look a bit chubby on the tummy. Now imagine us junk food maniacs. Sigh!

I say:

Overall I really liked the collection, it was very James Ferreira – flamboyance meets simplicity.

WIFW A/W ’12 My two cents –> Rishta By Arjun Saluja

Arjun Saluja’s ‘No Ground Beneath My Feet’ collection showcased a mix of structured as well as fluid silhouettes in warm textures and colors. His was one of the first collections at WIFW A/W 2012 to actually show pieces that looked impeccably autumn-winter-ish. Post the show, I took a deep breath and thanked him… in my head.

Me likey:

Great use of the colour grey. Mixed with lime greens and blue, it created a great effect.

The fusion of androgynous shapes and silhouettes in winter-perfect textures and colours made for a great range.

Burnt sequins on trousers and tuxedos jackets created a fabulous look.

Me no likey:

This show was just great. First show to get no me no likey comments.

I say:

Why “Rishta”?? Unlike his collection, his label sounds very filmi, very deceptive.
