Top 10 Travel Websites – Put Them On Your Speed Dial

If you use Opera Mini to browse on your phone and love traveling as much as I do then this post is a must read. Usually when a press release goes beyond 5 lines, it leads to yawning and eventual closing of the window but this one from Opera caught my fancy. For two reasons: it was well written and I love reading anything on travel. And fashion, of course!

Coming back to Opera Mini, it offers a feature called Speed Dial. Basically, the home window looks like a phone speed dial page where you can set your favourite sites for a quick one click access.  Recently, Ian Wright(travel show host) penned down top 10 sites that you ‘must have’ on your speed dial while globetrotting. Here are his picks in his words:

1.    Oh no, they cancelled my flight!

Before you get in line to rebook, give yourself the upper hand with flight information. FlightStats.com provides up-to-date flight details, airport delay maps, weather conditions and airline contact details. Things might be easier at the ticket counter if you can suggest an alternative flight, and it gives you a better chance of getting the itinerary most convenient to you.

2.    Where’s my luggage?

It’s late at night, you’re the last person at the luggage conveyor belt, and it stops – without your suitcase. Not to worry, dear Watson! After reporting to airport staff, be your own luggage sleuth and trace your missing bag on the airline’s tracking site, or via Mylostbag.com or SITA WorldTracer.

3.    Nowhere to stay?

Change of accommodation plans or just need tips for sightseeing and snacks? TripAdvisor suggests hotels, activities and restaurants — reviewed and rated by real travelers. Book lodging through TripAdvisor, or visitBooking.com, which helps find hotels with good deals. Deal of the Day can save you money if you need a room immediately.

4.    Taxi!

Afraid of being ripped off in a strange city, or taking the scenic route through dodgy neighborhoods?TaxiFareFinder uses taxi rates from more than 200 international locations. It provides not only fare estimates, but also route suggestions.

5.    Hey, has anybody seen my passport?

If you lose your passport, encounter visa problems or need emergency assistance abroad, contact your embassy for help. Bookmark india.gov.in, which offers a comprehensive list of contact details for all of the world’s diplomatic offices. The site is easy to navigate, and its search engine will help you quickly locate the office nearest to you.

6.    Ouch!

You never know when you’ll need advice on anything from a boo-boo on the knee to a full-out accident. If you need quick access to first aid information while traveling, it may be a lifesaver. Try BBC Health and St John Ambulance. If you’re feeling seriously ill, don’t waste time on the internet; go and see a doctor.

7.    Help, I’m lost!

Finding your way in a new and strange place can be frustrating. Lucky for you, map sites like Bing Maps can provide directions and a map of your location, right in your mobile phone. Also, check the advice of the1st Special Response Group on what to do when lost. Save this webpage for offline use, so you can access it later even with no mobile coverage.

8.    ¡No comprendo!

Frustrated that you can’t understand the locals or debating whether it’s wise to order something random from a foreign menu? Loading a language translator on your mobile browser can save you in those lost-in-translation moments. Google Translate supports 58 languages, and it automatically detects the input language before translating the text to the language of your choice.

9.    When there’s a storm brewing

Few things can ruin a good journey like bad weather. Keep up to date on your travel outlook with weather websites for highly targeted forecasts including local temperature, wind speed, humidity and water temperature. Use Accuweather and Gismeteo to plan the best days for outdoor sightseeing or hitting the beach, to avoid a ruined day of soggy clothes or even a vacation flu.

10.  Is this a bargain or what?

The exchange rate between currencies varies every day, so don’t rely on that conversion you memorized a few weeks before your getaway. Before you take out your wallet, go online to check the most recent rates. Yahoo! Finance’s Currency Converter provides the latest currency exchange rates for all major world currencies.

The next time you step out on a journey, don’t forget to load up your speed dial. Although, I would make sure to add one or two sites for local shopping too. What would you add to the list?

Now Trending :: Sheer

I don’t like to romanticize the sun, if you live in India you really can’t. So, I am not going to introduce today’s post by saying stuff like “soak in the sun this summer with…” No. What I want to tell you is to “beat the shit out of this heat with the ‘Sheer’ trend.” Yup, that’s more like it!

There’s nothing to be shy about. When I say ‘wear sheer’ I don’t mean you step out in an almost transparent white top with a sheer under and wait for it to rain a-la-bollywood. But actually, I’d be in awe if you did that!

However you wear it, wear it in style, wear it confidently, wear it gracefully and layer it with attitude. That’s how you wear sheer. There are degrees of sheer, choose according to what you are comfortable with and how toned your abs and legs are (yes it doesn’t have to be a top). Here are some ideas:

CITY

Granny Bras make for a great under!

wear with:

This Sannam Chopra Banjara Mood necklace (PRET-AMODA) is perfect to offset your city look. Buy it here.

KILLER

wear with:

Bracelets and earrings are better picks when it comes to this look. Seen here: Glam It Up Bowie Chain cuff

BOHO

BETTY

Wear it with:

Dainty meets geometry. Finish your lady-like look with this Love To Bag square red grettle clutch. Available at Pernia’s Pop Up shop

STAR

Phew now that I have put in so much effort putting up this post, you better give this look a shot. Will you? Will you? Don’t forget to send in a pic.

Unbreakable Spirit – A film by Fannie Schiavoni for Vogue Italia

I bumped into Fannie Schiavoni while waiting for a cab in Tokyo, she happened to be staying at the same hotel. For the next two days, she became my guide and shopping buddy. She introduced me to some interesting underground stores and Japanese pop culture. But more importantly, she’s a F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S designer and plays a lot with chain mails. Here’s a STUNNNNNNING film done by her for Vogue Italia

Do take a look!

Hello Mumbai, Shivan & Narresh Are Here!

Even though Juhu Beach and Chowpatty don’t exactly paint a picture of a beach city with women in gorgeous bikinis, Mumbai’s love affair with sandy shores and nearby destinations like Goa more than make up for it. To feed this obsession, India’s first and my favourite beachwear designers Shivan & Narresh have opened a store at Pali Hill, Bandra. I can’t tell you how excited I am about it. I am incredibly fond of them as designers and as people. There’s not a single piece in their store that I don’t absolutely L.O.V.E. Their store opening party was a great hit, the petit fours with their designs printed on them were pretty delicious, so were all the hors d’oeuvres catered by Dolce at The Leela Mumbai. They were served with great wine.

THE REBIRTH OF ONLINE SHOPPING IN INDIA

When Nidhi from PRET-AMODA asked me to check out the revamped site, I didn’t think it was going to be impossible for me to actually check out of the website without swiping my credit card… evil evil evil!! These guys have got it so right. They have picked up lovely fun stuff from new as well as established designers and priced them gorgeously. For the longest time I had a problem with Indian e-commerce sites for not being very visually stimulating. When you’re on NET-A-PORTER, TOPSHOP, H&M or ASOS websites, It’s so easy to browse, styling is impeccable and payment is easy-breezy. That’s why I am very excited that the newly-revamped PRET-AMODA ensures that we get the get that experience while shopping for Indian designer stuff too. I am absolutely loving this pampering!!

Since I am greedy, I would love to see more options under shoes and hair accessories. In terms of designers I would lurrrve to see more stuff from Eina Ahluwalia(I love her) and Nappa Dori.  Also can we have some Shivan & Narresh accessories too and some adjustable rings?? Okay so I will shut up now and show you the lovely stuff that I just picked up from PRET-AMODA.COM.
