Delhi Couture Week ’11: Finale by Rohit Bal

Can you imagine a fashion show where the elite, the uppity snobs and the creme de la creme of society go into a collective trance induced by mesmerising clothes? You wouldn’t have to, if you witnessed the Rohit Bal bridal couture collection. Each garment was just sheer brilliance! It was bridal couture at its best complete with drama created by many a leafless tree, loaded with oodles of fresh gajras. The choice of music was interesting too – he chose Mozart 25th Symphony, Third movement which is synonymous with Titan Watch commercials which in turn are synonymous with weddings!! Arjun Rampal walked the ramp wearing a tuxedo with a big/bold SHOW STOPPER printed across his slim fit shirt.

But, more than all the drama and glamour what made the show a success was the collection. A great mix of textures, detailed embroidery, elegant cuts and rich floral motifs made the collection stand out. Rohit Bal was the only other designer other than Manish Malhotra to showcase menswear.

The show ended with a zestful flower-fight as awestruck guests and models threw Jasmine flowers at Arjun Rampal and Rohit Bal as the designer took a bow. In fact they even broke into a little jig! I did manage to capture it all on video, but first some pictures:

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Manish Malhotra

He knows what he does best. He has been doing it for a long time. And this Delhi Couture Week he did it again and with splendour! Beautiful play of colours, the marriage of embellishment and embroidery, lovely details/cuts on the backs of blouses and net/sheer kurtas, blooming layers and some handsome menswear pieces made for an arresting collection. This post now sounds like a press release by MM. hahaha Anyway, take a look! You have to watch the video I shot to see these pretty clothes in all their glory.

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Shantanu & Nikhil

Honestly speaking, I haven’t managed to form a definite opinion on Shantanu & Nikhil’s couture collection at DCW. There was something off about their show. Having said that, some nice pieces and a very confident Sonakshi Sinha walking the ramp saved the day for them. Take a look at the pics and video and tell me what you think of it.

P.S: Dear Sonakshi, a little weight loss is definitely in order(we can do it!).

Delhi Couture Week ’11: Meera & Muzaffar Ali

Dear Muzaffar Ali, I am a fan of everything you do in terms of poetry, writing, films, painting, sufi music, social work and of course fashion. You were one of the first couturiers in the country and I am still mesmerized by those beautiful clothes worn by Rekha in Umrao Jaan.  In short what I am trying to say is that I am a tiny bit disappointed. What I saw on the ramp during your show at Delhi Couture Week 2011 wasn’t ‘couture’ in any sense of the word. Yes there were some really really gorgeous farshi ghararas, lehengas, peshwaz, saris and dresses infused with detailed traditional Lucknowi weaves, gota work, ikat prints and sequins but nothing said ‘Couture’. This collection could have been showcased at any fashion week! Please don’t hate me! Anyway, thank you for the superb live Qawwali during the show. It was truly beautiful!
